OBITUARY

MR THOMAS PATERSON. The death occurred at Ngaruawahia on Tuesday of an old and greatly respected resident of the Waikato, in the person of Mr Thomas Paterson, at tiie age of SO. The deceased gentlemanwas born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1870, eventually settling in the Waikato four years later. He was employed as an accountant by the "Waikato Steam Navigation Company _at Ngaruawahia, some years later leavingfor Auckland to join his brothers in the firm of Paterson and' Company, coach proprietors and grain merchants. In about 1893, the late Mr Paterson returned to Ngaruawahia to take up farming, and has resided there ever since, excepting for a short period when he revisited Scotland. The deceased gentleman took a prominent part in local pontics, and for many years was a member of the* Waikato County Council, the WaikatoHospital and Charitable Aid Board,. the Kirikiriroa Road Board, and was for 23 years clerk of the Ngaruawahia Town Board. Be had been hon. treasured to the Ngaruawahia Regatta Association since its inception, nearly 30 years ago. He was the first president lof the Ngaruawahia Bowling Club, and later hon. treasurer of that body. He was a prominent member of the Presbyterian. Church, was actively connected with several other organisations of a public nature, and for 22 years officiated as a Justice of the Peace. At the time of his death the late Mr Paterson was a director of the Farmers' Auctioneering Company, and a member of the Central Power Board. Despite his advanced years he retained his faculties until the end, and up till a' few days prior to his death took the same keen interest in public affairs as marked his earlier days. He insised in fact on going down to the polling booth to record his vote at the recent elections.
