INSURANCE PREMIUMS

FIRE UNDERWRITERS' PROMISED REDUCTION. The Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce had before it, at Tuesday evening's meeting, a matter that has excited a good deal of discussion among ratepayers, especially in the business area. IMr Warhurton referred to the insurance .premium rates on fire risks, and asked what was the position bearing on the promise made on behalf of the Fire Underwriters' Association that so soon as the fire fighting equipment of the Borough was brought up-to-date insurance rates would he reduced by ten per cent. He had made enquiries and he could not find that the promised reductions had been made. He thought some enquiry should be made for a definite pronouncement upon the suhject. There was a good deal of feeling among the residents, who had sanctioned a loan of £ISOO for adequate fire-ifighting apparatus in anticipation that the promise would be fulfilled. The Fire Brigade is now equipped efficiently, yet reductions in premiums had not been made. IMr Haselden gave his version of a statement made by Captain Watts, of the Fire Underwriters' Association, to the Borough Council, to the effect that if the ifire fighting apparatus is not brought up-to-date there would he no reduction. It was remarked that some agents of insurance companies were maintaining that a reduction of ,10 per cent, had been made, hut this reduction was universal, and not confined merely to Te Aiwamutu. The secretary was instructed to write to the Fire Underwriters* Association asking for a clear and concise statement of the position.
