CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS. The ordinary .monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce was held in the Waipa Post office on Tuesday evening when there were present: 'Messrs R. A. Coyne (president), 'D. McArthur, A. G. Warburton, J. Oliphant, H. Andrew, H. T. Haselden, C. G. Downes, Laurie, F. Parsons, A. Rowan and the secretary, Mr G. 0. Jourdain. ■Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Messrs W. D. R. McCulley and W. H. Culley. Messrs F. Parsons and A. Rowan were elected 'members of the Chamber. The president reported that it was impossible to arrange a deputation to the Prime Minister on the occasion of- his recent visit to Te Awamutu. A WELCOME. Mr Laurie, the new stationmaster, was accorded a hearty welcome as a member of the Chamber, the president expressing the Chamber's desire to work in harmony with all Government Departments, especially the railiways. The late stationmaster, Mr A. Fowke, had been a keen member and his knowledge of railway affairs was of invaluable help in the Chamber's deliberations. Mr Laurie acknowledged the welcome, and said he hoped at all times to work for the good of the town and district.

DISTRICT 'PUBLICITY

The secretary reported, in connection with the proposed booklet, that the Borough Council was contributing £2O, the Te Awamutu Power Board ,£2O the A. and P. (Association £2 2s, while the Waipa Racing Club had left the matter of contributing in the hands of the chairman (Mr A. S. Wallace) for favourable consideration Th° Te Awamutu Development League was apparently not functioning, but be understood it had funds in Hand, and no doubt would assist with the booklet scheme, as this would forward the object of the League's lormation. „ m , __, _, NEW RAILWAY TIMETABLE. Official notification was received from the .Railway Board of railway timetable alterations, including the inclusion of Te Awamutu as a stopping place for the new daylight Auck andWellington express trains. (The timetable was recently published in detail in the Waipa Post). iThe president's reply thanking the Roard for the very evident recognition of the requirements of Te Awamutu, was read and approved, several members expressing the opinion that the train arrangements are now a boon to Te Awamutu and district. IMMIGRATION. \ circular letter from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce on the subject of immigration was received SECRETARY'S SALARY. (Mr Oliphant gave notice to move at next meeting that the secretary s salary be fixed at £ls per annum. He explained that the work of an efficient secretary was so great that £ls was the least that could reasonably be offered and be thought the Chamber could pay that sunh \ M \TTER OF HEALTH. The risk of public health and of fire caused by the Railway authorities failure to equip railway houses in Te Awamutu with electric light in place of the present lamp and candle methods, was referred to, when it was s«.atefl that it is peculiar that the three new railway cottages on Paterangi road, and railway cottages at le Kawa, Ohaupo and other places have electric light installations, yet the four older houses have no such installation. The sewerage position was a menace to public health, and he attention of the- authorities should be called to this fact. BETTER ROAD TO KJAWOIA. Mr Oliphant referred to the reading facilities between Te Awamutu and Kawhia, and voiced a complaint from the latter district as to the very bad state of that portion of the road between the Kawa turn-off attd[the Ngutunui bridge. He had recently travelled the road, and was bogged twice. The Chamber would be dping a kindness to Kawhia settlers by supporting their representations to the Government for a straight-out grant The few settlers on land bordering the bad stretch of roadway 'were financially quite unable to have the Public Works Department subsidy lifted and he felt it was a genuine case where a granr should be provided. The road was listed as a main highway and is m the Otorohanga County. It was decided to make representations to the Minister for Public Works asking for a straight-out grant for metalling the portion referred to.
