ENGINEER'S REPORT.

THE MONTH'S WORK REVIEWED.

The engineer (Mr E. R. Gould) reported as follows to the Otorohanga County Council at its monthly meeting at Otorohanga. TE RAU-A-MOA RIDING.

The principal work of this riding has been the upkeep of the Kawhia main highway. Owing to ous wet weather t)he unmetaHed portions have been in a bad state, which has necessitated temporary expedients to allow the mail car to get through. The Highways .Board has now instructed that, this temporary work shall cease, and the 'Board's contribution toe devoted to work of a more permanent taken up, this can conveniently he done, and arrangements have now been nature. As the weather appears to have made to proceed with metal repairs near Te Rau-a-Moa and on the portion of the road over the Kawa swamp. 'Grading work on the clay portions will also be undertaken in a few days. In response to the Council's application for a £4 for £1 subsidy for the completion of the metalling on this road, a sum of money on a £2 for £1 subsidy basis only 'lias been voted. This, of course, is quite inadequate, and the matter has been again taken up with the Board. W/HAREPAPA RIDING. 1 Metal repairs have been elected on a portion of the Te Kawa-Ngaroma road near Korakonui. The work is not quite complete, but will be in the course of a few days. Arrangements will ,be made, if the weather continues fine, to grade the unmetalled roads in this riding. A subsidy of £SOO (£2 for £1) has ibeen voted for further metalling on the to raise a loan in connection therewith to raise a loan in connection therefith will be taken at an early date. A number of roads in the Aotearoa district have just been handed over to the Council, which will entail further maintenance expenditure, though_at present in very fair order. MANGAORONGO RIDING. Metal repairs to the main highway are being attended to. The wet weather and increasing motor traffic necessitate giving the road constant attention. Mr Lurman is now getting ahead with his formation contract on the Gorge road. If the weather continues fine the metalling contracts on the Paewhenua and Brock's roads should re-commence very shortly. iProposals will shortly be prepared for metalling about 1J miles on the west end of Lurman's road. HONIKIWI RIDING. Repairs have been effected to a numher of roads in this riding. The sharp corner on the Honikiwi road has been improved as instructed, and there can be no difficulty now for the average motor lorry to negotiate the corner. WAIPA RIDING. Metal repairs have been effected to the Otewa and Te Kuiti roads, and also to a number of clay roads in the riding. If the 'fine weather continues the metalling contracts on the Puketawai and Barber's roads will re-commence in the course of a few days. An additional subsidy has been voted for Barber's road, and further metalling will be taken in hand as soon as loan funds are available. MACHINERY. The Council is advised that as soon as funds are available to purchase a light motor lorry for cartage of metal and for general use. A road roller and a scarifier should also be purchased. The cost of the machinery mentioned will run into about £875.
