KIHIKIHI NOTES

General regret is being expressed on all sides at the passing away of the Premier, the Right Hon. W. F. Massey. At the .Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, reference was made to the event, suitable scriptures were read and the Misses Askew sang very feelingly "Abide With Me," while the organist, Mr W. McGhie, played, as an outgoing voluntary "Now the Labourer's Task is \ Over." The dance organised by the Roman Catholic ladies was not largely attended, but an enjoyable time was spent by all present. At a meeting of ladies of the district it was decided to hold a children's fancy dress dance on Thursday, June 2nd, to raise funds to improve the school grounds. Last Thursday the Te Awamutu Presbyterian Choir, conducted by Mr H. T- Salter, gave an admirable rendering of the cantata "Esther the Beautiful Queen," to a large and appreciative audience. In addition to the cantata, several part songs were given and solos were most acceptably rendered by Mrs McLean, Miss Edwards and Mr W. Mills. The annual meeting of members of the Kihikihi Anglican Church was held on Monday evening and was fairly well attended. The vicar, Rev. G. T. Robson, presided, and Rev. S. Burrow (curate) was also present. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £32, but this will be considerably reduced when the painting of the church is paid for. Following officers were elected for the year:— Vicar's warden, Mr D. A. McPherson; people's warden, Mr W. F. Lees; committee, Messrs Brown, E, E. Lees and E. Jackson; ladies' committee, Mesdames McPherson, Dyer, Hey and Miss a Lees. During the evening the vicar thanked the friends who had helped to repair the church and tidy up the grounds: The church has lately been painted and looks nice with its beautiful setting of trees. / A kitchen evening in honour of Miss Violet Askew, who is shortly to be> married, was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. Askew on Tuesday evening when the bride elect was the recipient of a large number of useful presents. In presenting the gifts Mr W. T. Brabyn expressed the good wishes of the company for her future happiness and Mr Henry Askew suitably replied on behalf of his neice. Games and competitions were heartily entered into and a-pleasant evening concluded with "Auld Lang Syne."
