MOA BONES DISCOVERED
FOUND AT WAITANGURU.
A mos.t interesting discovery was recently made by Mr John Barratt, of Waitanguru, in the shape of what appears to be the bones of a huge moa. These were discovered by Mr Barratt when blasting for road metal near Waitanguru. There are two large fossilised.'bones, one being two feet in length, the other about 13 inches, in addition to a number of smaller bones. The large ones are leg bones of the bird and thickly encrusted with stalagmite formation. They were found in a small air-tight crevice in the limestone rQck, in which a man could not stand upright, and this goes to prove that the bones are centuries old. The front of this crevice was covered with five feet of limestone rock. The bones are in a perfect state of preservation, and weigh 601bs. Mr Barratt has (says the Te KUiti Chronicle) offered to hand over this most interesting discovery to Mr W. J. Broadfoot to be' used in any way he. thought desirable.
