THE ANNUAL MEETING.

WELLINGTON, Friday.
The New Zealand Alliance adopted a greeting of welcome to the Govern-or-General, this being the first opportunity the annual meeting has had of greeting His Excellency. Mr Harry N. Holmes, executive secretary of the Council of Churches of the United States, addressed the meeting on “ The Inwardness of the American Situation.” He stated that the ■bulk qf opinion in the States was very firmly Dehind the prohibition law, and that national sentiment was in favour of increasing enforcement. The problem of enforcement was a difficult one in view of the mixed alient elements in the population, hut wonderful progress was being made.
