OTOROHANGA NEWS

ITEMS FROM THE KING COUNTRY,

Practice by the choruses in “The Pirates of Penzaqce” will commence q.6xT week. Messrs N. Symes (chairman), J. C. Paterson, J. N. Taonui, H. R. Gore and R. Hewer form the new Otewa School Committee. The newly elected School Committee at Kio Kio are the following: Messrs P. H. Rowe (chairman), W. Roberts (secretary and treasure), H. J. McGovern, A. Annan and A. E. Trott. There were seven nominations. “Resident” writes complaining of the neglect of the so-called caretaker of the Town . Hall, to heat the hall on picture nights during the winter per medium of the two stoves which were furnished by the Town Board some two years, ago, after many months of earnest 'consideration by the members of the Board. The neglect in regard to the stoves is likely to be the cause of the weekly attendance at the pictures being reduced to a non-paying minimum.

There are still many settlers who are not aware that they are in the Waitomo Power Board’s area, and one who has just discovered that he is, writes suggesting that maps of the district referred to should be obtained and distributed to the several 'local bodies so that those interested may inspect same and so be able to realise that they are in the Waitomo area and not Te Awamutu.

The Croquet Club’s dance held on Wednesday night was largely attended and nroved a success in every way. Mr C. Taylor was M.C. and Mr Christian provided the dance music. During, the evening Miss Atkinson sang a number which was very much appreciated, ,she being at her best and having a sympathetic accompaniste in Mrs A. Cooke. A first class supper pi-ovided by Mrs Jeffs was mucn appreciated. Mr J. Phillips, at Thursday’s meeting of the Waitomo Power Board, stated that though the Government line would be through Otorohanga in a few weeks this did not mean that the Board would be in a position to supply power. Of course this means that no reticulation would be possible until the Board got its finances fixed up and the -poles and wire required. Increased interest by farmers was shown in the Otorohanga A. and P. Association’s rtoot crop -competition yesterday, the entries being double the number of those of last year. Entries came from as far afield as Te Rau-a-Moa and made as fine an exhibit as could be found anywhere. Messrs W. H. Smith (Te Kuiti) and T. Kearins (Kio Kio) were the judges and plated the competitors in the following order of merit: G. W. Richards (Otewa) 1, G. W. Richards (Otewa) 2, and S. J. Sanson (Kio Kio) h.c. These awards were all for swede turnips, which were very fine specimens. There were also entries of kumi kumis and beet. Next year, if finances allow, this competition will be a field competition, the roots being judged in the paddock. Particulars as to tilling and the manures used will have to be given on the entry forms and competitors will be allowed to accompany the judges through the paddocks. The Magistrate's Court sits here next Wednesday, when a lengthy list of civil and other cases will be called. There are several chargee of overspeeding and also cases against farmers for not destroying rabbits and failing to clear their properties of weeds.
