4» WANTED A "LONG STRETCH." (By Telegraph. Press Association.) HAMILTON, Friday. Edward John Matthews, a middleaged man with a lengthy list of convictions against his name, gave himself up yesterday to the police, stating that he could get no work, and asking for "a long stretch." During the night in the lock-up he changed his mind and told the magistrate at the Court this morning, when charged with having no lawful means of support, that he had made a rash decision when he was in a state of depression. Matthews, who promised to go to a dry district, was placed on probation for 12 months, and a prohibition order was issued against him.
