Acting ,on a motion of the Government Auditor, who has been scrutinising the [books of the Wellington branch of the Repatriation Department, Detective Nu'ttall yesterday arrested L„*». McCardle, who for some three ye;S? past has been accountant to tiie branch, on a charge of the theft of two sums of money, viz., FJM and £lof>o, from a Government department while in a position of irust. it is understood the alleged defalcations ftxtend over a considerable period.
