THE ARMS ACT.
REVOLVERS UNSALEABLE
The amendment to the Arms Act passed during the last session ol Parliament restricting the possession of firearms has practically stopped the sales of revolvers and many ironmongers and other dealers have considerable stocks on hand. The matter was mentioned in the House by Mr D. Jones (Kaiapoi), who asked the Minister of Defence if the Government proposed to take any action in the direction of compensating these merchants or taking over the stocks of revolvers which they could not sell as a result of the operation of the Act.
Sir R. H. Rhodes said that he was not aware that any very large stocks of these weapons were held. It was true that the police issued very few permits, only bank managers and a few others being granted this privilege. He thought that the only way was for the merchants to export their stocks of revolvers. In any case the Government had not yet decided to compensate those who held these unsaleable articles, but he would undertake to consult Cabinet with a view to seeing, whether some relief could not be afforded.
