REPLY TO MR MULHERON.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In reference to the New Zealand Co-operative /Dairy ICompanyls meeting at Hairini on 28th July, Mr P. Mul.heron made a very heated speech against the new company, the Waikato Valley Dairy Co., known as the Maoriland Dairy Co. in the Wanganui and Taranaki districts. At present this only interests people who have heard Mr Mulheron’s- speech against the management of the new company. When I'heard the speech I thought of the old saying, “ There are two sides to every question.” I was travelling by the Main Trunk express that night, and thought I would find out for myself what the farmers supplying the Maoriland Dairy Company thought of its .management and the way it treated its suppliers. I did not represent myself as a representative of any farmers’ organisation and up against the big co-operative concern (New Zealand Dairy Company), but I didn’t think it was a good thing for any company to have full control and no healthy competition. I inquired from the farmers in ’the district where the Maoriland Dairy Company is operating one simple question: “How is the Maoriland Dairy Company treating you? Does it treat you as well as other dairy companies ?” The replies were varied. 'Some made a short “yes”; others would explain how the company did treat its suppliers better than other companies, and ail bore out the same facts—that the Maoriland Dairy Company is well liked by its suppliers and by business people in the districts were it operates. I would impress upon the dairy farmers to make inquiries from the new own suppliers as to how it runs its business and if it is worthy of support.—l am, etc., L. W. MAXWELL.
