A Te Awamutu resident "was in Pukekohe the other day, and his observations should serve as a lesson to those people who are advocating local power-generating schemes. At Pukekohe the people had every promise of cheap and reliable power service, and a substantial loan expenditure was sanctioned. In practice they are getting neither. The consumers are paying 9d per unit for lighting and 5d per unit for power, and even at these charges the installation is a losing proposition. Worst of all is the fact that the system is unreliable; the lighting fails repeatedly, and r>n a recent occasion the supply was cut off for four days at a stretch.
