UNPROFITABLE MINE.

WATKOKOWAI OLOSED

(By Telegraph. Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, This Day

The Minister of Mines has decided to close the State coal mine at Waikokowai, near Huntly. Development of this mine has been progress for some time, but the stage of coal production has not yet been reached. The tunnel would have been completed to the seam in a few months, but the coal could not be made available for use till the mine had been connected with Huntly by a railway, and the Minister has been informed that the construction of a branch line would cost about £125,000. The original estimate was only £43,000. The Mines Department will retain the property and let it for grazing.
