OTOROHANGA.

GENERAL ITEMS. Mr R. R. Morton advertises'a clearing sale on account of Mr W. H. S. Dockery, Kit) Kio Road, fbr 22nd of June ,at noon. The war memorial committee* has successfully collected the amount it aimed at, some £SOO being the sum in hand. This amount, it is expected, will be sufficient to pay for the section whereon the memorial is to be erected, and a general meeting of the subscribers will be held to-morrcw afternoon at the Town Hall, when the committee will present -its report. There are no less than 45 , ntames handed in for inscription on the monument, a large number for a district like Otorohanga. There is a place dangerous, to motorists on the Te Kuiti Road, just at Mr C. G. Murphy's gate. There, have been no less than four mishaps to motor cars recently, each 'vehicle having gone/into the drain from off the road. On Tuesday evening Mr R. McCready's taxi plumbed the drain, and had to be left there until yesterday morning. Something might be ( done by the County. Council to mitigate the danger. The official unfurling of the flag given by Mr Oudaille to the Paewhenua school will take place on July 8, according to present arrangements. The Otorohanga Cricket Club's dance on Monday evening proved a great success, things being kept going until early morning. The Waipa Drainage Board has had good work done in the way of draining, and the country affected is already showing as a grazing area, and will in time be one of the greatest assets to Otorohanga. The two large drains already put in have been made conscientiously, and the Board is to be congratulated in having entrusted the work in' one case to Messrs Devoich Bros, and in the other to Mr E. McGrath. This latter drain was done by day labour, and a fine body of Maoris, under the supervision of Mr McGrath, carried out the work well. This drain is about 80 chains long and 14 feet wide at the top, and 7 feet wide at the bottom, while its depth averages 9 feet. Two more lengths have now been let by contract to the Deveich Bros., who will no doubt be the right men for the job. A concert in aid of the instruments fund of the newly-formed Otorohanga Town Band will be given in the Town Hall on Wednesday 29th June. The prices of admission are 3s and 2s. Mrs E. H. Oudaille will hold a gift afternoon at her residence. Otewa Road on 17th instant. This is in aid of St. Bride's Church funds. Arrangements have been made for Mr Roberts' car to run out/at. intervals at a ■f&rfi of Is. ' t \ " Paddy's market" will, be held every alternate Friday (commencing to-morrow) at the old Red Cross shop near the Mart. The proceeds are to go to the Catholic Church bazaar. Afternoon tea will be provided. Nominations for the vacancy on the Waitomo County Council caused by Or/Murphy's resignation are due on 24th June, with the county returning officer at Te-Kuiti. The election, if any, will be held on Ist July. The' Otorohanga senior footballers play Pio Pio here on Saturday, and the game is looked upon as the one of the season.
