LOCAL AND GENERAL

The third annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce is to take place this evening.

Mr W. Roberts notifies that, to meet a district requirement, he has opened a butchery business at Te Kawa.

Mr W. Jeffery advises us that the rainfall at Te Awamutu for the week ending at 7 o'clock last night was 1.34 inches. Tenders for*' the publican's booth, to close on Saturday next, are .invited by the Waipa Racing Club in connection with the annual race meeting to be held at Te Awamut* on August 22nd. A final reminder is given of the recital by the Rev. J. B. Suckling in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. A splendid programme will be presented, and a good evening's entertainment is anticipated. Mr W. F. Stewart, postmaster, who is at present on holiday leave, left Te Awamutu on Friday for Auckland. Mr Stewart's leave extends over a period of three weeks, and in his absence Mr C. K. Edwards will be in charge of the office. A replace advertisement appears in this issue from Messrs House and Daking, in which record reductions are announced in connection with their gigantic winter sale. Country residents can with confidence post their orders. Any article not approved can be exchanged or money refunded.* Constable Lander yesterday arrested at Te Awamutu a man named Fraser Henry Ashton (alias Bennett) on a charge of obtaining from John Ryan, of Hamilton, the sum of 30s. by false pretences. Ashton later appeared before Mr. H. R. Ryder, J.P., and was remanded to appear at Hamilton on Wednesday morning.

With a view to demonstrate the advantages of the New Zealandia milking machine, the local agents, Messrs Heerdegen and Andrew, have arranged to have a complete working model in operation at their showrooms during this week. An expert will be in attendance to give farmers full particulars as to the working of the machine, and a cordial invitation is extended to the farming community. Particulars appear in Messrs Heerdegen and Andrew's advertisement in this issue.

Huntly ratepayers have sanctioned a loan, by no, votes to 9, of £6ooo, for the irstallation of an electric lighting plant. Mr H. Wingate Mulhs, who has been in charge of the erection of the now completed road bridge at Kawa, left Te Awamutu this morning for Auckland. Acting under instructions from the Town Board Mr A. S. Wallace (chairman) and Mr D. Bockett (town clerk) on, Saturday completed negotiations for the purchase, from Mr M. S. Laurie, of five and a half acres of land adjoining the saleyards for saleyards extension purposes. 1 In acknowledging receipt of press tickets for the recital which takes place at the local Town Hall to-morrow evening by the Rev. J. B. Suckling, we have to express pleasure that for once, the first occasion for many months now, our representative will be saved the unnecessary inconvenience of having to introduce himself to the official in charge of the door. It is a recognised courtesy that press tickets be extended to press representatives whose duties require their attendance at social functions. The courtesy has for long been overlooked by the promoters of various entertainments. Going further, some societies hold meetings of which we are never advised. Consequently, no press report is given of the proceedings, and the persons interested voice protest. We mention these matters because we recognise that our mission is to give publicity to all local matters of public interest, but in this a certain and reasonable amount of " courtesy" should be shown towards us by those who are apt to complain.
