SALEYARDS EXTENSION.

THE completion of negotiations by the Town Board for the purchase of the lands adjoining the

Te Awamutu Municipal saleyards for-saleyards extension purposes—present and future—will, we feel sure, have the hearty endorsement of every ratepayer. Ihe growth of tlie Te Awamutu stock sales has been phenomenal and especially during the past five years. This growth may be attributed to two causes, firstly as a result of the development and j striking expansion of fanning pursuits in the district, and secondly reasonableaccommodalionoffered in the new yards which were erected five years ago. These sal-jyards are possibly the best asset we possess, benefiting town and country alike. To the town they prove a sound municipal investment, which'is shown by the fact that at dace, even after allowing for the cost of improvements and additions made, £l6B is standing to the credit of the saleyards account. The indirect value of this municipal asset is fully recognised «b.y all and cannot be over-estimated. Therefore the local authority is following a very wise policy in making provision for future additions that must soon be found necessary. A loan proposal for improvements I and additions to the present yarding accommodation is mooted, and the people will do well by supporting the Board in its policy of providing every facility for the stock sales of this district/ The purchase of this property will have an important bearing upon other other municipal works. • Running thiough this property is • the main drain, so that the Board • will now have absolute control of • that drainage area, and, with the inauguration of a sewerage system will have its own land : upon which to erect septic tanks • and necessary equipment con- : nected with the sewerage system. Furthermore, in the event of an electric lighting and power in- ; stallation, a central and wellsituated site is provided for the erection of the power station. : We regard the Board's purchase : j as a sound and business-like one, ! and congratulate it upon having , I satisfactorily completed arrangements.
