KORAKONUI.

(Own Correspondent.)

A concert in connection with the Sunday school was held on Thursday" night week in the schoolroom. There was a good gathering of children and parents and others interested in the Sunday school. The concert was held for the purpose of promoting interest in the good work being done in the Suritlay school, and for the presentation to the scholars of prizes for good attendance. This is the first occasion on which any public function in connection with the Sunday school has been held, and it is pleasing to note that the affair was entirely successful. Mr W. R. La wry presided, and in a short address spoke of the work being done, and of the progress that had been made. In very high terms he commended Mrs Jameison’s perseverance in the organization of the school. After the distribution of the prizes a very nice supper was served and a number of musical items rendered, which were much appreciated. Those who contributed to the programme were: Mesdames Girven, T. H.'Lawry and Beckerleg, Messrs W. R. Lawry, Beckerleg and T. H. Lawry. Recitations by several of the children were also rendered. The work on thfe road is still going on, and about half a mile has now been metalled. Nine waggons are in commission, each getting in about five loads a day. It is anticipated that the work will be finished in another fortnight. The school grounds have been cleared by the settlers and ploughed by Mr Kay. Most of the material for fencing is at hand, but during the last few weeks most of the settlers have been busy on the road works. There is an area of about 7 acres belonging to the school, and it is hoped that thio will be ■fenced and divided as soon as possible, and that least some of it will be put down in grass in the coming spring. As it is there is no adequate accommodation for the children’s horses, added to which disadvantage is the fact that a ploughed ground round a school is not conducive to keeping it as clean as desirable.
