NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT WAIPAWA RINKS ELIMINATED. Beautiful weather prevailed for the opening of the New Year tournament of the Hawke’s Bay Bowling Centre at Hastings on Monday, but yesterday the sport was followed under trying conditions, a gale making it impossible to draw with any degree of accuracy. Two teams from the Waipawa Club took part—Limbrick, Dunkin, Critchley, and Eagle; Kenny, Ireland, R. 'Petherick, and "Russell. The former finished up with four wins and two losses. On Monday they beat Plested (Napier) by 19—18 and Essen (Hastings) by 26—11. In the third game, however, they went down to Wardell Johnston (Bluff Hill) by 19-—lB after a very keen game. Yesterday the team lost their first game to Lassen (Kia Toa), by 23 —15, but defeated Anderson (Havelock) by 22—17 and Wilson (Havelock) by 26—13. The second rink were not so successful. On the first day they lost to Morgan (Havelock) by 22—11, beat Elmes (Napier) by 17—16, and lost to Cooke (Napier) by 20—13. Yesterday also they were successful on only one occasion, beating Joll (Havelock) by 38—14, and losing to Sykes (Kia Toa) by 24 —23 and to Berry (Heretaunga) by 17—14. Waipukurau had four rinks in the competition. Webley tied with Cooke and Briasco in B section with five wins. Oliver (Omarunui) went through section D without a loss, and Bennett (Hastings) and Thomas (Napier) won their sections with five wins each. The semi-finals and final are being played to-day.
