RAILWAY ENGINE DERAILED
BLOCKS TRAFFIC BETWEEN NAPIER AND HASTINGS. HASTINGS, Last night. Owing to the derailment of the engine of a goods train on what is known as a service siding between railway bridges at Waitangi about 1 o’clock this afternoon railway traffic between Napier and Hastings was held up for some hours. Napier passengers from the Wellington express were taken from Hastings to Napier by bus, reaching their destination at 5.40. The usual evening NapierPalmerston North passenger train left Hastings at 5.30, about 20 minutes late. Napier passengers by this train travelled by bus to Hastings. The cause of the engine leaving the rails is unknown. The siding on which the derailment occurred was built to accommodate a large railway steam crane which was engaged in dismantling old wooden bridges. The engine had backed on to the siding to bring out a truck loaded with piles from the old bridges and just as it was rejoining the main line the leading bogey and driving wheels left the track. The line was again open for traffic to-night.
