Yesterday was the 71st birthday of Queen Mary, and the fiag at the postoffice was flying 1 in honor of the occasion. The death is reported from Hastings of Mr Thomas Cater, father of Mrs A. Egglestone, formerly of Waipawa. Mr W. A. Woodger, district traffic manager of the N.Z. Railways, was a visitor to Waipawa yesterday. Mr Woodger was at one time stationmaster here. Two Ministers of the Crown, the Hon. P. Fraser and the Hon. F. Langstonc, will visit Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty next month. The R.t. Hon. the Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage, purposes making a leisurely tour of the North Island within the next fortnight, visiting nine or ten electorates. He anticipates being away from Wellington about eight days. The Hon. Mr Justice Ostler, who is on sick leave, and Mrs Ostler, left Wellington by the Awatea to-day for Sydney. From Sydney they will travel by steamer to Queensland, where they intend to spend a few months. The death took place at Napier on Wednesday of Mr W. (1. Nightingale, the well-known sporting writer who contributed notes to the “Telegraph” for 43 years over the pen name of “The Squire.” For many years he followed the occupation of a saddler, being in the employ of Mr J. McVay. At the time of his death Mr Nightingale was 81 years of age. St. John’s Presbyterian Church was crowded to the doors last evening on the occasion of the marriage of Miss Marjorie Malcolm, of Ruataniwha, to Mr Rupert Sowry, of Whangarei. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. F. W. Robertson. Subsequently upwards of two hundred guests were entertained by Mr and Mrs A. L. Malcolm in the Municipal Concert Hall.
