HIROPO TAREHA’S FUNERAL

IMPRESSIVE SERVICE. HASTINGS, Last night. Maoris from all parts of the North Island, including relatives, and a very large number of pakeha friends of the late Mr Kurupo Tareha, attended the funeral held at his former residence at Waiohiki on Saturday afternoon. Following the interment a tangi was held in the grounds. Mourning for the departed chief was carried out in accordance with traditional custom from the time of his death on Thursday night, and Saturday afternoon’s ceremony was the culmination of the rites, when visitors were received at “the house of mourning” by Mr Rohera Tareha, brother of the dead chief. The beautiful service, which was almost entirely in Maori, was read by the Bishop, of Aotearoa (the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett), assisted by five native clergymen. The service, which lasted'for nearly two hours, was watched by a very large gathering including representatives of business, farming and professional interests in Napier and district. Play was suspended on the Napier Golf Club’s links and a large number of Mr Tareha’s former fel-low-players attended the service. Amongst a large number of messages of sympathy received was a long telegram from the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), and during the service the Government’s sympathy was extended to the house of mourning by Mr E. L. Cullen, M.P. A nephew of the late chief, on behalf of the house of mourning, thanked the visitors for their attendance. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Tareha, K. Tareha, G. Tareha, D. Tareha, J. Wilson, and P. Doibel.
