INSTALLATION OF MAYOR

BY MR C. G. E. HARKER TRIBUTES TO CO-OPERATION AND LOYALTY. ’ Before the ordinary matters of last night’s meeting of the Borough Council were dealt with, the formal business of installing- the Mayorelect and the new Council took place. The retiring Mayor, Mr C. G. E. Harker, welcomed the new Council and congratulated the new Mayor on the fact that his nomination met with the entire approval of the electors of the Borough. His unopposed election showed that his service as Deputy-Mayor over two peroids was greatly appreciated, that his wholehearted devotion to duty, and his soundness and saneness were recognised. Mr Harker congratulated the three old councillors on their reelection, as it showed that they had the confidence of the electors. He also congratulated the three new councillors, because they were young citizens. It had not been easy in the (last, he said, to get young men to take an active interest in civic affairs, and for this reason alone he considered that the town was to be congratulated on their introduction to public life. All the councillors could feel some justifiable pride in their election in that they had been selected from a large field. “I wish you. Mr Mayor,” said Mr Harker, “a very happy period of office, and I am sure you will receive from the Council the same loyal support that I received from the Council during my term of office.” In conclusion Mr Harker thanked the town clerk and the overseer for their loyal service during his term.

The Mayor and Council then made the customary declaration of faithful service to the Borough, after which The Mayor heartily thanked Mr Harker for attending to perform the installation ceremony and for his kindly commendation. Mr Harker, he said, had at all times taken an active interest in the progress of the town, and that interest would, he felt sure, continue. If the meetings of the new Council were conducted with the same accord as during the term of the retiring Mayor everything would be 100 per cent. Mr Eagle said be was very pleased to see three of the old Council re-elected. It showed that their services were appreciated by the burgesses. In regard to the three new councillors he heartily endorsed the remarks of Mr Harker. In conclusion the Mayor impressed on councillors that whatever differences they may have at the Council table they would not carry them outside. At a later stage, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Harvey, Cr. IL. T. Limbrick was elected Deputy-Mayor.

In acknowledgment Cr. Limbrick took advantage of the opportunity to congratulate the Mayor on his unopposed election. He felt sure that the whole Council would work together for the progress and good of the Borough as a whole.
