WELLINGTON WIN ON FIRST < INNINGS. RACE AGAINST TIME. AVELLINGTON, Last night. In the Plunket Shield cricket match 'Wellington failed to get an outright win against Auckland by 17 runs. When Auckland’s last wicket fell AA'ellington had only two and a-half hours in which to score 14(1 runs, and when the last over was bowled at 5.30 Ihev had scored 129 for the loss of five wickets. In their first innings Auckland made 156 and in the second 212, the last three wickets going for one run. Wellington, in their first innings, made 223. Auckland is thus assured of a win in the shield series, and even if Wellington had won the match outright, evening up the points, Auckland would have won on the averages.
