Of interest to New Zealanders is the appointment of Mr J. K. Ross Duggan to be editor of “Canadian Trade Abroad,” a new Toronto publication. Mr Duggan was at one time on the staff of the Waipawa District High School.

Before proceeding to deal with the business at to-day’s meeting of the County Council the chairman (Mr L. Glenny) referred to the death of Mr U. Gray, father of Cr. B. Gray. The deceased, he said, was a well-known settler and was highly respected for his sterling qualities. A vote of condolence with Cr. Gray was carried in silence.

R. C. Blunt, the Otago end New Zealand cricket representative, has accepted a business engagement in Nottingham, England, offered by the well-known sport sponsor Sir Julien Calm. He leaves New Zealand at the end of this month. Although unable to play in county championship cricket, Blunt will he eligible for other cricket in which the residential qualification does not apply. Following 1 upon an operation performed shortly after the last session of Parliament, the death occurred on Saturday of the Hon. E. 11. Clark. Chairman of Committees of the Legislative Council. Mr Clark was one of the most prominent members of the Upper House. He became ill shortly after last session, and he underwent an operation in a Wellington private hospital. His condition improved immediately after the operation, but lie weakened recently and finally passed away peacefully on Saturday. A serious accident occurred in Wairoa on Saturday morning. Mr J. Bretherton, aged 42, employed as a gardener at the County Hospital, was taking his children to school in a horse-drawn vehicle, and the accident occurred while traversing Kopn road. It appears that th horse played up and a shaft broke. Mr Bretherton’s little girl, Monica, aged 11 years, was thrown out and a wheel of the cart smashed a thigh. The child also suffered severe abrasions. Mr Bretherton was kicked by the horse and sustained severe internal injuries. Both victims were (alien (o the hospital and an operation was at once performed on Mr Bretherton, whose condition is considered very serious. Mr Bretherton is a son-in-law of Mr and Mrs Coe, of Waipawa.
