BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MONTHLY MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Present —The Mayor (Mr G. Hunt) and Crs. IV. E, Yates, A. S. BoydTurner, S. A. Dailey, W. J. Harris, R, Hutchings, J. Morley, CORRESPONDENCE, The secretary of the Fire Brigade asked that measures be taken to prevent the parking of cars over fireplugs. He also drew attention to the condition of the hose. —Referred to the Fire Brigade Committee to confer with the brigade, The director of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind asked for orders for the products of the Institute’s workshops, the letter pointing out that the finance of the institution had suffered considerably through the withdrawal of the Government subsidy.—Filed for reference. The N.Z. Red Cross Society thanked the Council for its offer to cooperate in an appeal to the public on October 11th.—Received. The Unemployment Board forwarded particulars of the No. 5 scheme, and advising the reduction of payments. —The Mayor said the essence of the scheme was that men would be able to earn the same amount of money as heretofore but would have to work longer.—Received. The Highways Board advised that the renewal of culverts would be regarded as maintenance, but particulars must be submitted for approval. —Received.

The secretary of the Unemployment Committee asked for terms for the use of the Concert Hall for fortnightly euchre tournaments. —Charge of 10s per night to be made for a series of not less than eight nights. The secretary of the Waipawa Cricket Club applied for the use of Coronation Park for the coming season.—Granted, on the same terms as last year. MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS. The theatre bookings during the month of August were as follows: Pictures, 12 evenings, matinees, 5 afternoons; meeting room, 10 evenings; theatre, two balls (Plunket and Charity), one concert (Methodist Church). The steps leading outside from the kitchen are in a bad state. The wood is rotten and if not repaired may lead to an accident. Routine cleaning and caretaking have been attended to during the month. Town Clerk instructed to have steps attended to. RANGER. The ranger reported having found 13 cows wandering at large in the Borough during the month.

WATERWORKS. AVater pumped for the month of July and August, 3,906,600 gallons. Pumps worked 170 hours. Units used, 7485; cost, £ls 11s lOd. AVater pumped during the months of July and August, 1931, 3,952,540 gallons, an increase of 54,060 gallons on this year. During the month the electric plant was out of order for a short time, an accident having happened to the timing apparatus. Mr J. Lee, Power Board engineer, was called in and had the machine attended to and it is again working satisfactorily. The spare plant was worked during the delay and is in good order. GASWORKS. The gas made during the month was 429,600 cubic feet, an increase of 28,000 cubic feet on the corresponding month of last year. There has been one new gas connection made for Mr Rowney, McGreevy street, and one new cooker installed for Mr T. Wills in Ruataniwha street.

Mowing the grass at the memorial clock grounds, and general maintenance at the gasworks was the work done for the month. The Mayor said the cost of reconditioning the furnaces was a few shillings over the estimate of £275. Had it not been that freight estimated at £2O had amounted to £45 the cost would have been well under the estimate. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Most of the unemployed men have been employed in lowering part of AA r averley street to the permanent level. Others have been employed cutting scrub and making improvements to the entrance to Coronation Park. Further river protection has been made to Lindsay Reserve. There is also a break in the river-bank opposite Coronation Park which His Worship the Mayor has authorised to be attended to. This will be completed this week. Through the lowering of AVavcrley street an addition has to be made to the main sewer. This work was completed to-day. The gas main will also have to be lowered for a few chains. The team has been engaged in metal patching and grading, also carting soil to Coronation Park. The hoarding board at Coronation Park blew down and has been taken to pieces. The timber being totara has been stored away for future requirements. The impounding notice board has also been removed, the letters and reading being quite obliterated. It is for the Council to decide if it should be rewritten. Repairs and alterations to drain connections with the usual maintenance is the work done for the month. The horse loaned to the Council by

Mr Hamilton has been returned, he requiring it for his own work. It will be necessary for the Council to purchase another horse to keep the roads in good order. No action was taken in regard to the re-erection of the pound notice board. The Town Clerk was empowered to purchase a horse. GENERAL. The pay-sheet, as under, was adopted:—District fund, £442 10s lid; gas, £194 14s sd; total, £637 5s 4d. Tenders were received from Limbrick Bros, and M. Holder for the supply of electric bulbs. The prices being the same the Council decided to divide the order, provided the lamps are of English manufacture.
