BOWLS.

During the week-end a rink from the Waipawa Bowling Club paid a visit to the “San” and had an enjoyable game with the boys. It is probable that two or three rinks from Napier will pay a visit to Waipawa on Saturday, 24th inst., and advantage may be taken of the opportunity to 1 ( try out” the new green to ascertain if it will he playable for the Easter Pairs Tournament. Very slow progress is being made with the Pairs Tournament of the local club, and those concerned will find themselves left with heavy greens on which to play the concluding games unless they get busy. In connection with the champion of champions rink games at Christchurch last week, “Skip” says in the “Press” that it may surprise many bowlers to know that the umpire had to disqualify no fewer than eight pairs of bowls for being either unstamped or bearing thq 1913 stamp, which is now out of date. “It seems to me,” says “Skip,” “that there must have been a great deal of laxity with umpires when Pennant games were played that these bowls were not discovered before. However, it would be advisable for all players to see that their bowls are properly stamped, and save unpleasantness when these games are played.”

That the rules of howling are being recognised and more stringently enforced day by day, Avas exemplified in one of the‘games when a Canterbury player put his boAvl away Avithout Aviping the chalk off it from a previous lead, Avrites “Skip” in connection Avith the Otago-Canterburv match. There is no question whatever about it that the Otago man A\ r as quite justified in removing it from the head according to the rules, but I venture to say that thousands of times in a season this rule is broken, and it is the first time the Avriter has heard of a “chalked” bowl being lifted from the green and placed on the bank disqualified. In bringing this little incident under the notice of players, let it be a lesson to them to see that their bowls are properly cleaned before they are played.
