NEW COAL FIELD.

PROMISING TESTS. (Per Press Association). t GREYMOUTH, This day. For some time past boring operations have been in progress on a nine-mile seam and the results have, so far, exceeded anticipations. An analysis of the coal shows it to be of the very best quality and superior to that obtained from the Liverpool Mine. As steam coal it may prove equal to the best mined in New Zealand.

The area covered by the new field is very extensive and-outcrops and boring's show at the least 13,000,000 tons of coal, sufficient for a twenty years’ supply. The mine is three miles from Runanga station. The country being flat there are no engineering difficulties in the way of railway construction. The mine could be put in full working order in 12 months. At a large meeting at Runanga, last night, over which the Mayor presided, Mr Holland, M.P., addressed the meeting and a resolution was carried that in view of the fact that the Point Elizabeth mine was practically worked out and owing to the serious shortage of coal in the Dominion causing famine prices the Government be urged to proceed with the development of the mine. The resolution will be forwarded to the Acting-Premier and Minister of Mines.
