ADVANCE ON JASSY

ROUMANIAN POSITION SERIOUS. BUT NOT HOPELESS. Times Service. LONDON, August 13. The offensive against Roumania is continuing with unabated violence. The battle lasted for six days and the Allies were driven back five miles. The loss of the loop line connecting the two main railways in Moldavia is a serious interference with transit. A telegram describes the advance as threatening the route to Jassy. The situation is serious hut not hopeless. The “Times’ ” Odessa correspondent states that owing to the closure of the frontier the situation at Jassy is regarded as dangerous. Marshal von Mackensen’s driving hack the Roumanians at Marasesti threatens to cut the retreat of the Roumanians fighting at Mona, so as to enable the invaders to secure the grain crops of eastern Moldavia. The King and Government have quitted Jassy for Russia.
