TRAIN AND MOTOR.
SMASH ON MAIN TRUNK LINE. TWO PERSONS KILLED. (Per Press Association). PALMERSTON N., Last night. A fatal accident occurred on the Main Trunk line this afternoon. A taxi cab driven by Madge, of Palmerston North, with three passengers, Evans, stock agent, Palmerston, li. li. Goudy and Mrs Goudy, Ruanui, attempting to cross the railway line on the Palmerston side of Taonui station, collided with the New PlymouthWellington express. The taxi was approaching from the left hand side, completely hooded, and going the same way as the train. The driver could not see or hear the express coming and went straight on the line, where the express crashed into the cal) at an estimated speed of forty-five miles an hour. The taxi was smashed to matchwood. The driver and Evans escaped with minor injuries. Goudy and Mrs Goudy were thrown back on their heads on the cattle stops, receiving very serious injuries, to which Goudy lias since succumbed. The express pulled up and the injured were brought to Palmerstou and conveyed to the hospital, where Goudy died from his injuries. This day. Mrs Goudy, the victim of the motor smash, is dead.
