TIKOKINO.
(Own Correspondent). The beautiful autumn weather of last week was suddenly interrupted by some very cold showers last Saturday. Winter was ushered in with sharp frosts on several mornings. The snow which fell on the ranges has disappeared during the past few sunny days. Three children belonging to Mr Roach had a very narrow escape from a serious accident recently. Through some misadventure a pin in a tip dray in which they were riding became unfastened, the result being that when some weight was transferred to the back of the cart it tipped up over a well, into which the little children were precipitated, along with some empty barrels that were being used for carrying water to a chaff-cutting machine. Fortunately the water was not a great depth, and the barrels were first in the headlong flight, or serious, if not fatal, results might have had to be recorded. Beyond a few bruises and scratches, the youngsters escaped unhurt. Drivers of vehicles may well be advised that a heavy responsibility rests on their shoulders when they allow young children the privilege of “having a ride.” Miss D. Vigers, of Ormondville, is at present acting as relieving mistress in the infant department at the local school, filling the position vacated by Miss Lund. The place of Miss Cooper, now absent on sick leave, is being filled by Miss Harper, from Hastings. For a fortnight, however, perhaps through a shortage of teachers, the school had to he carried on with a staff of two. On Wednesday lust a presentation of an easy chair was made to Airs J. Matheson, who has for the past nine years acted as caretaker at the public school here. Advancing old age, with its infirmities, has caused a faithful servant to relinquish duties which have been carried out in such an efficient manner that the School Committee decided to mark its appreciation thereof in some tangible form.
