KING’S MESSAGE TO HIS TROOPS. INSPIRITING REPLY. (Received This Day, 1 p.m.) LONDON, April 17. General Townshend replied to the King’s message:—“All ranks are inspirited by His Majesty’s message and the knowledge of our Sovereign’s sympathy will be our sheet anchor in this defence.” QUESTION IN THE COMMONS. WHO ORDERED THE ADVANCE? (Received This Day 1 p.m.) LONDON, April 17. Replying to a question as to whether the Indian or the British Governments had authorised the advance on Bagdad, Mr Chamberlain said the Commander-in-Chief in Mesopotamia made the proposal to give battle at Kut.
