OFFENSIVE MAY BE ABANDONED. FRENCH ATTACK ON METZ FORESTALLED. AMSTERDAM, April 17. German newspapers hint at the abandonment of the attempts on Verdun, declaring that the German move was intended merely lo forestall a tremendous French offensive against Metz planned for yesterday. The French calculation of German losses are declared to be absurd. The correct figures are not given but it is stated that 90 per cent of the Germans wounded at Verdun will be able to return to the front. GLORY OF ARMS. “WE SHALL BEAT THEM.” PARIS, April 17.
