Transport of Troops.
[Per Press Association] Wellington, This day
Iu connection with the complaints concerning the alleged defective arrangements for the transport of troops to the Canterbury Easter mameuvres, the Geueral Manager of Railways says : - "There is always trouble in regard to the volunteers. They oousidor iu many oases that they should receive much greater consideration than is extended to the ordiuary public, and yet they are supposed to he acting under war con ditious. We do the best we can for them but our experience has not been satisfactory. There is considerable lack of discipline, and as a general rule, wo don’t get much assistance from the officers. At the Oringi encampment things wont off very successfully and tho officers worked admirably and gave every assistance. We only have u certain amount of rolling stook, aud I take it that women and children have the first claim ou the ooversd carriages. Most of the volunteers are young men and most of them would put up with far greater inconvenience to attend an athletic contest or play in a football matoh.”
