The first meeting of the Patangata Road Board was held in the Mechanic’s Institute on Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. Clark, W. H. Small, W. T. Witherow and R. A. Trotter. Leave of absence was granted Mr A. Dillon, owing to illness. The Board’s overdraft is £221 12s 4d. Mr W. T. Witherow was elected chairman for the current year, and, with Mr Small will retire at the end of this year as decided by ballot. To cover the overdraft the Board adopted this measure : That in view of the Patangata County Council declining to strike another rate for the Board this year, unless, for a smaller amount, they strike a general rate themselves and collect it early, thus liquidating the overdraft, and limiting the work for this year to a small but needed bit of road making at Bowden Town, which will just about absorb the balance and Government subsidy. It was resolved that any two members may sign cheques drawn by the Board. A broken pipe culvert was ordered to be repaired, which terminated the meeting. The fortnightly meeting of the Debating Society was held on Monday evening, Mr F. A. Garry presiding. The programme was “The Question Box,” and keon interest was taken in answering the questions, many of which were thoroughly fought out. The next meeting will be " A Surprise Evening,” which it is hoped to make a success.
