Traffic receipts on the Suez Canal in the first quarter of this year amounted to £1,176,943, against £1,135,701 in the same period of last year, and against £1,273,G08 before the reduction of the tonnage dues. According to the figures supplied by the eight Irish banks, the remittances from abroad to Ireland, presumably from emigrants to their friends at home, paid by those Irish banks in the course of 1906 amounted to £1,075,375.

Owing to the increased cost of materials, labour, eta., the two companies that control practically all the telegraph services in the United States have raised their rateß by from 30 to 40 per cent. Argentina’s immigration campaign for 1906 was a record one, the arrivals totalling 260,000. If the rate obtain-

ing during the first quarter of the current year be maintained the total arrivals in 1907 will reach 400,000. The present population of Argentine is in excess of 6,000,000. According to the financial statement of the Treasurer of the Kingdom of Tonga, the revenue of that country for 1906 amounted to £32,467, and the expenditure was £29,285. With the credit balance of £14,404, carried over from the previous year, the credit balance to revenue now stands at £17,586. The revenue derived from taxes for 1906 amounted to £12,245, while Customs and wharfage dues totalled £11,714.

The gold production of the Commonwealth for the first four months of 1907 shows a decrease of 108,843 ounces as compared with the corresponding period of last year, and New Zealand exhibits a shrinkage of 30,222 ounces, making the Australasian yield 139,065 ounces less. All the colonies exhibit decreases, West Australia being 49,339 ounces and Victoria 30,770 ounces to the bad.
