NAPIER NEWS.

(Own Correspondent.) Napier, Yesterday.

The school committee held a special meeting to-night, to further consider the appointment of a successor to Mr John Caughley. The Board forwarded a letter that they could not agree to the recommendation of the committee that the whole of the applicants’ names be sent forward. A lengthy and somewhat heated discussion followed, several members stating that they intended to take the stand of demanding the committee’s right to make a selectiop from the full list of applicants. It transpired in the course of the discussion that amongst the names not sent forward was that of the second assistant master at the Mount Cook school, Wellington, and enquiries had revealed that he is in everyway qualified to fill the vacant position in the local school. His educational status is equal to that of the present third assistant master here (and whose name was forwarded by the Board) and the committee therefore were unanimously agreed that his name should have been submitted. Finally a letter drafted by the chairman, fully setting out the arguments in favor of the committee’s request, was ordered to be sent to the Board. The question is an important one, not only to the local committee, but also as affecting the whole of the school district, inasmuch as the action taken by the Napier committee challenges the right of the Board to practically dictate appointments.

At to-night’s meeting of the school oommittee the chairman, in the course of the discussion, referred to Mr John Caughley as “ unquestionably the most able teacher in the whole district.” The Kaikora committee have, therefore, every reason to feel satisfied with their selection.

The A. and P. Society’s general committee to-day decided that the secretary’s salary remain at £2OO, with the right to take outside work. Applications in these terms will therefore be invited. The question of appointing permanent judges was discussed, and it was decided to instruct the society’s delegates at the conference to urge the consideration of how best to improve the system of judging at agricultural shows.—lt was also decided to request the conference to discuss the question of making rabbit fences legal boundary fences.—The Railway
