(Own Correspondent.)
The Pretoria news was received here about 6 p.m on Thursday, and caused intense excitement. The public feeling of joy finally settled down into a long procession, with every kind of toy instrument and kerosene tin by way of a band. Chinese lanterns were in great demand, and the whole town turned out, forming a procession about half a mile long, which paraded the town in all directions, crossing the traffic bridge and back. A stand was made in front of the Post Office and “ Rule Britannia ” and “ God Save the Queen ” were sung most heartily with cheers for Her Majesty and “ Bobs.” The excitement seemed even greater than on Mafeking night. Some of the shops‘closed yesterday, and there is a feeling abroad that public a holiday and a public demonstration should be held at an early date. Strange to say the Tuki Tuki river is hardly over its normal winter height, notwithstanding two days’ almost incessant rain, which last night was exceptionally heavy.
