[Own Correspondent.] Mrs Doar having been mistress of the Makaretu school for a period of nine years, resigned her position in February last, chiefly on account of the death of Mr Doar, and being ill herself for many weeks. During the nine years that Mrs Doar had occupied the position of mistress she had earned the love and esteem of the pupils, and the thought of parting from her had caused a sincere pang of regret amongst them. In addition to high qualifications as a teacher she possessed rare tact in the management of children. Miss Doar was pupil teacher with her mother for three years and earned the esteem and love of all her pupils. Many were the expressions of regret when her determination to resign became known. The good people of Makaretu were determined not to let Mrs and Miss Doar sever their connection with them without showing some mark of their appreciation of the services rendered by them, and for their many acts of kindness shown during their residence amongst them. All were eager that some gift should be presented to show the esteem and respect for both ladies. Owing to the continued indisposition of Mrs Doar, the presentation took place at her residence, Stanton Farm, Blackburn, on Saturday afternoon, in tho presence of several friends. Messrs Pine and ltosvall, on behalf of the Makaretu school committee, friends and pupils, then presented the articles (regretting at the same time that it could not have been made in a more public manner, when duo appreciation could have been shown by parents and children). The respected chairman, Mr F. Gradwell, J.P., unfortunately owing to illness in the family, was, at the last moment, unable to bo present. To Mrs Doar: A superb eight-day clock on marble stand, a silver afternoon tea set, consisting of teapot, sugar basin and cream jug. To Miss Doar : a handsome gold brooch, a set of gold sleeve links and collar stud, and a lovely silver buckle with engraved initials “ L.D.” Mrs Doar was deeply affected and could not express her feelings. Mr H. D. Hardy then, on behalf of Mrs and Miss Doar, gave a neat speech, in which he desired the above gentlemen to convoy to the good people of Makaretu their deep and sincere thanks for the very handsome and useful presents, and to assure them all that both ladies would treasure them highly and have a kind and happy thought of the time spent amongst them.
