FOOTBALL.

I TheMakotukn clnb have forfeited their rttorn match against Waipawa, in conseqcence of not being able to get a team together. . Up to the present no championship fixtures have been arranged for tonjorrow. This is the result of the Union shirking its doty and allowing secretaries ofclnbs to make matches, which are suppled to suit the convenience of the jompeting clubs. As might have been foreseen, each club wishes to meet a weaker one and none will agree to compete with a strong one. One of the objects for which the Union was called into existence waß to draw up fixtures ind unless the delegates carry out this part of their duties fairly and firmly disorganisation will result. At Napier on Saturday the cup match between the Pirates and Caledonians resulted in a draw, each team securing a try. The club practices on Mondays and Fridays have so far only been attended by those players who are in good training. Sarrly the miserable exhibition of foothill displayed by several forwards last Wedieaday against Takapau was sufficient for them to see bow untrained they were. There is no reason why the forwards should not be the strongest pack in if it were not for two or three, who apparently are determined not to trouble themselves about training. The dob will be playing at Danevirke shortly, tnd probably at Napier, and to either of these places it would be folly to take untrained forwards. The forwards are

requested to meet at the repository at 7 30 this evening. A match has been arranged to take place at Waipawa to morrow afternoon between the following teams: “ A” team : -Fallback, C Irvine; three quarters, Miller, J L Reed, Waitai ; halves, Garratt, L Bathbone ; forwards, Arrow, Brown, Hopkins, Peters (2), Robb (2), Gilmour, Bone, Ferguson, Pickett, Moroney, New znao, Downer, O’Reilly. “B” team :—Full back, Anderson ; three quarters, Butts, Beanmont, W Gilmour; halves, Cracknell, Baker; forwards, Sebley, Wilson, H Rathbone, McSborry, V Kronpa, Collett, Greclide, W Irvine, V Reed. It is to be hoped that every member of the first fifteen will realise that this practice is absolutely necessary and turn up on the ground punctually at 2.30. Mr Whittington will referee and Messrs Bennett and Riordan fill act as touch-judges.
