CRICKET.
The cricket match as played in Waipawa, in the paddock kin ily lent by Mr A. Scrimgeour on the 22nd inst, Juniors v. Seniors, was an unqualified success in more ways than one. First it revived the grand old game, and secondly it convinced many that cricket was not a dead letter in Waipawa. Yes, there was some very good play on both sides, more particularly with the Juniors. The bowling of young Skerrett was very good and well sustained ; young J. Bibby bowls a good over-ball, and when he gets a little more muscle to give it more pace he will be a teazer. Jas. Cosgrove is also a very promising bowler. One thing the juniors lacked was experience in placing their field ; their men were at one time too much scattered, at other times all of a heap like Brown’s cows. In the batting part of it, young Skerrett proved that he has got it in him, and, with a little more caution and plenty of practice, he will be a valuable acquisition to the club. Young E. Rathbone also plays a very good straight bat. The fielding upon the whole was good, but one great mistake was made more than once, viz., throwing at the wickets instead of putting it up sharp, breast high, to the wicket-keeper, who was there to receive it. However, this we have learned, that there are growing up in Waipawa some smart young cricketers, who will ere long make their mark. As to the Senior eleven, it was well known they had had no practice. Yet, there were some of our old cricketing active as usual. If the Juniors contemplate a return match with the Seniors, I would advise them to practise up and .let us have no short runs, no no-balls, or wides. Nemo.
