Dr Schraber will take command of the German New Guinea exploring expedition, which will leave Hamburg in February The French Government will be ah. lowed to retain possession of the Islafni of Riatea, in return for fishery concessions in Newfoundland. Sixty moderate Liberals are prepared to vote for a measure to suppress boycottingin Ireland. France lias occupied Sumbawa, one of the Sunda Islands in the Malay archipelago. . The directors of the Bank of England to-day reduced the bank rate of discount from 4 to 3 per cent. Tenders were opened to-day for a loan of £21,000 at 5 pt-r cent., placed upon the market by the Waimakariri River Boad. The amonnt applied for was £51,250. Tenders at £lO4 7s and upwards receive their applications in full.
