NORSEWOOD.
(from our own correspondent.)
Since my last letter very little of importance has occurred here. During the last week, the Assessment Court sat, A. Kennedy, Esq., being Assessment Judge. There were about 40 objections made, but as only seven or eight were taken notice of by the objectors, the list of valuations could not have been so wrong after all. Mr J. B. Smith, the hotel proprietor, is going to leave his establishment, and I hear that a well-known publican from Napier is coming in his place ; if so, I think ho will do very well. Still wo aro sorry to lose Mr Smith, who has always been well liked. Our schoolmaster is suddenly leaving us, what for nobody seems to know. I heard that the parents of the children were going to present him with a gold-mounted walking cane, as a token of their esteem, but I do not think they will have time to do so, for his departure is fixed for Tuesday. There is a great deal of sickness in the district lately, and twelve children havo died recently, besides adults. The school is and will bo closed as long as sickness is prevailing. Three lists are circulating at Makatoko, Ormondvillo, and Norsowood, in order to obtain subscriptions towards a fund for presenting our late constable, Mr Laureuscn, with something handsome ; and indeed ho deserves it, if anybody does.
