WOODVILLE.

(from our own correspondent.) April 24. T take this opportunity to send you a few items of the news of the district. About a week ago a curious and miraculous accident happened to a carrier plying between Woodville and Palmerston. He was returning through the Manawatu Gorge at 10 o’clock at night, with a load of timber drawn by three horses. When near the waterfall, the horses got off the road, and, consequently, the load capsized, and horses, load, and brake went over a perpendicular bank, a distance of about thirty feet. Excepting a few bruises and cuts to one of tlio horses, very little injury was done to anything, the driver escaping altogether by jumping off the load. The Bishop of Waiapu was to have preached in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening, but owing to the room being occupied by a society on that night, the members of which are regular tenants, and cannot alter their night of meeting without authority from head quarters, a committee of the church members will therefore bo held at the hotel.

I am sorry to say that our constable has not yet recovered the use of his leg sufficiently to bo able to walk without a crutch and stick. This fact is to bo regretted, seeing that affairs at “ the corner” are not carried out quite so much in accordance with the requirements of the “ Licensing Act” as was the case when the said constable was able to got about; and although not one of those fanatical disciples of the pump, T yet think it looks rather bad to see those living in the township popping in the back door on Sunday, first taking a good survey up the road, down the road, and then round “ the corner” (taking observations of the weather I suppose), and coming out with a suspicious wiping of the mouth. Some people appear to think it a great thing to evade the law, especially hivrs regulating the drink traffic ; and those who are supposed to have the administering of the law aro not always th e exception.

by Mr Maras. The counters are of polished rimu, being one plank for the full width. One great acquisition to the district will be the steam sawmill, lately erected by Mr Norman Campbell on the Masterton road. The mill is now in working order; and an unlimited supply of timber near at hand should enable the proprietor to meet the demand at cheaper rates than getting the timber from Palmerston. I learn that the district is about to bo benofittod by a new blacksmith’s and wheelwright’s shop. The proprietors of the new venture are Messrs Horne and Hull, for many years with Mr A. Jones, of Waipukurau. So far as I can gather, both of these gentlemen are splendid workmen, and are likely to find a good opening for their talents in this district. The merits of Woodville as a place for business men to settle in are just becoming known, and 1 think a steady inflow of population will set in.
