PORANGAHAU.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 21. Strange to say, for the last week our usually very quiet and sedate township has been in a violent state of excitement, owing to large meetings taking place almost every night. To commence with, we had a race meeting on Wednesday lust, or rather, I should say, a meeting to consider the advisability of getting up races, to take place about Christmas time. Owing to insufficient notice, the meeting was illattended, and it was thought advisable to call another on Wednesday, which is accordingly done.

The next excitement was the opening of an Oddfellows’ Lodge here on Saturday last, which I believe was attended largely, and about sixteen new members in.tiat* d, but not being an Oddfellow, I cannot give you any further particulars. Last, but not by any means least, was the forming of an Orange Lodge, which took place on Monday, the 15th. There is no doubt on that day and night it was dangerous to be safe. Ferocious-looking individuals were to be seen strolling about in every direction, with every conceivable -weapon, from a long-handled shovel to a pair of tongs. Strange to say, however, on the night of the meeting, there was nobody killed, and only one door smashed where the meeting was held. Next morning the proceedings were a little more serious, - and during the skirmish one worthy Orangeman was dragged over a shop counter by his nose. Since then a considerable quantity of tar and feather pillows have been stolen. What for I cannot exactly guess.
