WAIROA.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 19. Your readers will doubtless be somewhat surprised to find a letter in the columns of the Waipawa Mail from such a distant corner of Ilawke’s Bay as tho Wairoa. The aim of every newspaper should be to unite the several districts that go to form a country or province and make them one ; to make these districts, no matter how poor or neglected they may be, better known, and generally to forward the interests of the whole province, as well as the particular district in which such newspaper is published. The editor of the Waipawa Mail, in finding space for the occasional letters which find their way to Waipawa, will be accomplishing this end ; the. oftciicr the name of a district is made known in the public prints, the more is tho interests of the district forwarded.
I notice you have transferred from the New Zealander to your paper a notice referring to the rejection of the endowment clauses of the Wairoa Harbour Board Bill, you are therefore acquainted with the nature of our request to the Government. Owing to the rush for harbors, which was made this session by every insignificant place, we have lost a chance of getting the endowment for the harbour. The Bill has, however, been passed without the endowments, and all we can do is to wait for the next session to obtain the needful, meantime we must eniov the crust we have got. Volunteering has been again revived. A meeting was held here oil Tuesday last to take steps to form a volunteer corps for Clyde. About 30 men have been already enrolled, and it is confidently believed that a corps of 50 strong can easily ho mustered. Some persons desired it to be made a mounted force, but that idea has been wisely overruled, and it is decided to make if an infantry corps. Church matters are progressing sat torilv. The funds for the. erection of The Church of England an; now close on £4OO, and it is hoped that in six months’ time sufficient funds will be obtained to commem o the building. A musical soiree and social gathering will he hold next week to raise funds to fence in tiie site. The Presbyterian Chureh Committee has already exceeded its expectations, money coming in from ail quarters; and in this matter of church buildings, Napier and Waipawa deserve the thanks of the community for so readily responding to tho fail. A grand fancy bazaar, presided over by Wairoa ladies,‘will be held here on Boxing Day, and it is* expected to realise £IOO clear. This, I believe, is rather over the mark, but I am informed that no effort will be spared to make it u success in a financial point of view.
