THE TRACKS TO ALBERT STREET

Sir, —On Tuesday last I saw a woman with two small children in a pram straggling to get to the town from Albert Street, and for those who may not know where such a street is, let me tell them that it branches off from about half-way down the Duke Street hill. The lady with the pram got so far up one track and then had to return to the bottom because of rolling stones. Such is the bad condition of the track, and that is all it can be called, that it was impossible for her to proceed any further. The lady with the pram was not to be denied, and so she made another attempt to the left of the road, struggling through long grass and weeds and more rolling stones. We cannot all reside in favoured parts of the borough and the people who live in Albert Street are entitled to a little consideration. I think Mr Halliday’s idea of a ratepayers’ association is timely.—l am, etc., “Another Ratepayer.” R.S.A. AFFAIRS Sir, —Replying to your correspondent “A Little More Thoughful,” I consider his remarks a little wide of the mark, I was discussing the “Spirit of not “General Picnics.” He seems to consider that to extend the real “Spirit of ’Xmas” and all that it stands for down through the ages, to the children of the R.S.A. members would be asking quite too much. I do hope he has noticed the Press notices arid pictures of R.S.A. parties given to children in other centres. His nom de plume was both “right” and “wrong.” He should certainly be a “Little More Thoughtful”; but personally I think if he had signed his letter “Scrooge” it would have been much more in keeping with his views about kindness to children at Christmas.

One only takes up his pen on behalf of children because they themselves are unable to do so. —I am, etc., “Thoughtful.”
