Nine Debutantes Presented at Last Night's Ball

Nine debutantes were presented to the guest of honour, Mr Neil McLeod, of Te Aroha, at the annual ball of the Cambridge Caledonian Society in the town hall last evening. The ball was well attended, and a fitting opening to the social season in Cambridge. The presentation was a delightful scene. The stage had been beautifully decorated by Mrs T. Turnbull, using chrysanthemums, autumn leaves, greenery and balloons to form a background for large bowls of heather, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, multicoloured leaves and berries. Two red and two blue rampant lions completed the setting. The guests were individually piped to the stage to be received by Mr T. C. Wallace, chief of the Cambridge Society and Mrs Wallace. The party included Mr Neil McLeod, Mr G. F. Sim, M.P., the deputy-mayor, Mr A. J. S. Richardson and Mrs Richardson, and representatives from the Hamilton, Morrinsville and Matamata societies. At this stage four cups were presented to members of the Pipe Band, as follows: Reid Cup, for most improved drummer, Mr Peter Jones; Ritchie Cup, for the most improved piper, Miss Jean Reid; Grey Cup, for best piper, Mr Michael Grey; Wallace Cup, for general excellence, Mr Bill Kelly. In presenting the cups, Mr Sim congratulated the Caledonian Society and wished it every success in the future. The debutantes were then received by Mr McLeod and Mrs Wallace. The debutantes' , waltz completed a very attractive ceremony. Music was supplied by the Merrymakers' Orchestra, of Hamilton. * The debutantes were:— Helen McKinnon: Who wore a picture frock of moire taffela, fashioned with a bouffant' skirt, which featured insets of ruchings. The Titling bodice had the new sloping shoulder line caught into a knot at the neck-line. The wide sash forming a large bustle. Real Scottish heather and pastel roses formed her bouquet. Mrs McKinnon, who presented her, wore black eyelet embroided georgette over cyclamen, with a toning shoulder spray. • Rene Anderson: Chose white organdie over satin, with a fitting bodice, boat-shaped neck-line and puffed sleeves. The sleeves and neckline were edged with French rouleau. From the pointed waistline offset with rosebud trimming in pastel tones, fell a very full skirt. She carried a posy of buttonhole chrysanthemums, in pastel tonings. Presented by'Mrs Kernoghan. Margaret McLiesh: Organdie over satin, the fitted bodice and gathered sweetheart neck-line were finished with silver sequins, and puffed sleeves. The skirt featured three tiers each edged with sequins. Chrysanthemums, rosebuds and nerins in pastel tones formed her bouquet. Presented by Mrs Kernoghan who wore a frock of black silk moracain trimmed with sequins and a shoulder spray of carnations and maidenhair fern. Betty Looker: Over a satin underskirt she wore silk lace, made with a low waist, sweetheart neck-line and extended shoulder line. She wore a coronet of pink roses which matched her bouquet of pink carnations, roses and maidenhair fern. Mrs Looker, who presented her, chose black satin backed crepe fashioned with a cross over bodice, long peplem and bishop sleeves. Betty Chapman: A five-tiered net skirt edged with sequins, fell from a fitting bodice of lame, with draped gathered sequin net falling over the shoulders to form the sleeves. She carried a posy of white roses and pink carnations. Mrs Bartrum presented

her in a floral frock worn with a toning spray. Maureen Byrne: Chose white silk all-over lace over satin, fashioned on period lines, with' a heart shaped shadow neck-line edged with self frilling, plain sleeves coming" to a band then forming a wide frill. From a tight fitting bodice fell a graceful three-tier skirt. She carried a posy of deep red roses and real Scottish heather. She was presented by her mother, Mrs Byrne, who wore rust embossed satin. June Pulham: White lace, long coatee, sweet-heart neckline. Skirt of net worked with silver sequins; flowers of pink and blues. Presented by her mother, Mrs Pulham, wearing light blue, also worked with silver sequins. Eileen Higgins: French sheer over white taffeta. From the round neckline a lace edged frill formed the sleeves. The feature of the bodice was a satin ribbon which formed a bow in the front. The skirt fell in three tiers. She wore mittens to match. Blue delphiniums, and pink chrysanthemums formed her bouquet. She was presented by Mrs Mervyn Wells, who wore cream taffeta with petunia and black bands. Frances Burns: Chose a full circular skirted gown of white lace over satin; featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline, trimmed with net and sequins. Her mauve bouquet contained chrysanthemums, fuchsia and maidenhair fern. Similar flowers formed her head spray. She was presented by Mrs Mervyn Wells. Strong Committee An excellent supper was served by a strong ladies' committee. The tables in the supper room were attractively arranged with low bowls of chrysanthemums, heather, autumn leaves, and an exquisite array of other late autumn flowers.
