YOUNG FARMERS DEBATE ON GAMBLING

H Taupiri B. Young Farmers’ Club debating team travelled to Cambridge last week to debate the subject “That the State should legalise and control, in addition to the totalizator, other means of gambling, such as oF-course betting and lotteries through Hie Post Office.” Their opponents were Cambridge A., consisting of Messrs G. C. Herbert (leader), J. R. Lang and J. C. Shaw. The adjudicator, Mr W. R.. Garrard, awarded the home team the decision by 269 points to 263 points. The Taupiri team was Messrs F. Barry (leader), R. Cooper and G. Bryant. This subject was chosen for the .second round of the Waikato Young Farmers’ Clubs district committees’ annual debating competition for a shield presented by the Federated Farmers (Waikato). In the first round the Cambridge B. team was narrowly defeated by Taupiri C. and Cambridge A. defeated Waerenga B; the subject being “That N.Z. Farming is Inefficient.” The subject of debate for the third round will be “That N.Z. Should Foster a Vigorous Policy of Selective Immigration.” • The chairman at last week’s debate was Mr J. Smith, of Fencourt, the timekeeper being Mr H. M Russell, Pukeroro.
