Trenchant Has a Popular Win

RACING AT PAEROA ETARO TAKES STEEPLECHASE Although 13-13 in the betting, the win of Mr T. M. Morriss' Trenchant at Faeroa, on Saturday was well received. Trenchant had shown a glimpse of better things ahead at Thames, and Mr Morriss had the Trench Fight gelding in fine nick for the first division of the Brennan Memmorial Hack Handicap at Paeroa, which he he won' by two lengths from Queen's Knight and Sir Fox. The only other Cambridge horse to pay a dividend was Bonnie Grey, also trained by Mr Morriss. She was only a neck behind Travel King in the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap, with Ayles-

bury a length and a half away third. The Cambridge .condklate' in the Poland Cup, the main event, was Mr L. R. Haworth's Bedivere, and although he went a good race, he' was made undue use of in the straight, and weakened into fifth place. The winner was Polo, who beat Silver Lighting by a neck, White- Blaze being close up third. ' Etaro repeated last year's performance to win the Maramarua ■Steeplechase easily by thirty yards from the favourite, Hunto. Yank at a good price, battled on in third place. After several disappointments Grand Tourist won the Flying Handicap by a nose from Bonny Pay, with Contango a head away third. Tavernside was given his first race for some time, but was never prominent. Once again Floral Dance failed to race up to expectations in the Kerepeehi Handicap, in which event Swanee and General Burleigh were also in the ruck tlvroughout.
